Little Birdy has the crowd a-chirpin’ at Queenscliff

Perth band Little Birdy took to the stage at Queenscliff on Saturday night for an hour-long set from 8.30, and before long the marquee was packed to the brim. Fans were gathered in eager anticipation of hearing live renditions of tracks off the band’s latest album Confetti.

Whilst the show mainly featured tracks off the new record, old favourites were interspersed as well for those more familiar with the band’s older work. Many of the band’s previous singles achieved great success in the Triple J Hottest 100 charts. Katy Steele even mentioned that it was Triple J first playing “Relapse” on the radio which put them on the path to where they are today. For old fans like myself it was this that struck a chord, but it seemed the majority of the audience were more concerned with the newer songs made evident by the audience reaction when the band began playing the well known tracks off Confetti.

As Steele sang out the first line ‘My brother, he taught me how to fly,’ (a reference to her brother Luke Steele, of Sleepy Jackson and Empire of the Sun) the crowd let out a roar of enthusiasm. The band also played the new single “Stay Wild’” and if the audience reaction is anything to go by, its success is likely to surpass that of the first single from the new album, “Brother”.

As their time on the stage was nearing its end the majority of the dancing crowd were already caught up in the distinct sound and steady beats characteristic of Little Birdy. It was fitting that the band brought out the popular and upbeat track “Bodies” to finish up the show as hundreds of bodies were in motion, from the young and energetic up the front to those at the back nodding or swaying along. All in all a superb performance, as to be expected from this top notch Perth group, and this proves that we can expect just as much from the band when they hit up the Falls Festival in Lorne this New Years Eve.
