Beth King

Beth King is a 23 year-old singer-songwriter currently based in Northcote, Melbourne. Blending a pure, expressive voice with unassumingly intricate guitar, Beth’s whimsical meandering tunes and honest, story-based lyrics form relaxed entrancing music that curls around the ears and delightfully tickles.

With a passion for singing initiated at the age of two and a half, Beth wrote her first song at eleven. Singing and performing mainly original work, her style has evolved over time and currently embraces elastically melodious (and sometimes funky) folk.

In 2004 she began singing and writing with friend and guitarist, Cam Fink. They played co-written songs along with individual originals in a guitarist-vocalist duo, performing at The Tote, The Cornish Arms, Cape Live, The Brunswick Hotel, Caz Reitop’s Dirty Secrets and Bar Open among others. Cam and Beth made a demo cd in 2005 and Beth is looking to record an EP in the near future.

Beth currently plays solo with her guitar around Melbourne, and also performs with The Hemingway Collective, a folk-funk outfit formed in early 2009. Check out their myspace at www.myspace.com/thehemingwaycollective.

Beth and the band have performed at venues including Manchester Lane, Bar Open, 303, The Drunken Poet, Wesley Anne, The Evelyn, Dantes Fitzroy, Vibe on Smith, Open Studio, The Rainbow Hotel, The Empress, The Fox Hotel, The Great Britain and The Workers Club as well as at many cosy open mike nights.

Beth has shared a bill with the Ben Smith Band, Simon Bruce, and Dub the Magic Dragon among others, and in 2007 was the first heat winner in the Good Folk Song Competition held in Brunswick, with her performance covered in the Moreland Leader.
