The Veils are one of the most exciting, moving young bands making music today, although they have hitherto flown under the radar of the musical masses. This may well change this month as they bring their moody blues-influenced alternative rock to Melbourne for the first time since 2007, playing the Queenscliff Music Festival and a limited run of east-coast shows.
Comprised of charismatic singer Finn Andrews (son of Barry Andrews, keyboardist for New Wave icons XTC) and bass player Sophia Burn (both Kiwis), and guitarist Dan Raishbrook and drummer Reife Burchell (both British), The Veils are the real deal. Their talent and the furious power of their live shows has become the stuff of legend, and has brought the London-based band widespread critical acclaim and a passionate global fan base from as far apart as Japan and Eastern Europe.
Chris Brother-of-Mick Jagger was originally scheduled to play the Queenscliff Music Festival, but was unfortunately forced to withdraw at a late date due to health reasons. What an unexpected boon this has been however, with music-lovers now getting the opportunity to see the Veils play songs from their stunning new album Sun Gangs, released earlier this year. In typical Veils fashion, Sun Gangs mixes dark, brooding ballads with upbeat melodies and Finn’s trademark screeching displays his impressive vocal range. Similarities to Jeff Buckley and Joy Division have been noted in the past and are indisputably deserved, however The Veils are possessed of a truly unique and mercurial talent beyond compare.
